You can easily broadcast live audio on the internet and this audio can consist of recorded files (e.g. MP3/CD collection) or live content (e.g. your voice through a microphone).
There are 3 basic stages in the transmission of audio over the Internet:
The source (you)
Your computer mixes the sound sources coming from the sound card (which can be an mp3 playing, a live voice or the sound from a CD player, etc.). These sources are then made into a 'stream' of data (stream) and sent directly to a server.
The Server (us)Pointer's Icecast Server will receive the stream coming from your computer and then distribute it to the listener.
The listener (everyone else)
Anyone in the world with an internet connection can connect to your server. Whatever you send to your streaming server, your listeners can listen to it.
